In the Holy Scriptures, orphans (most often translated as "fatherless") represents the most vulnerable members of society, and scripture repeatedly commands God's people to feed, clothe, and protect these fatherless children.
A father of the fatherless is God in His holy habitation, and undefiled religion before God is to visit widows and orphans in their time of need. Psalm 68:5 and James 1:17
In ancient of days, a child without a father lacked legal protection, social standing, and economic survival.
Orphans are almost always mentioned alongside widows and foreigners (sojourners) as a primary group requiring community protection and justice.
Exodus 22:22-24
You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry; and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
Deuteronomy 14:28-29
At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates. And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.
Psalm 68:5
A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation.
Malachi 3:5
I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness against sorcerers, against adulterers, against perjurers, against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, and against those who turn away an alien—because they do not fear Me,” says the Lord of hosts.
Matthew 19:14
But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
John 14:15-19
If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.
James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
